London's Sex Industry

London’s most famous red-light district is Soho which has been the centre of its sex industry for over 100 years. Soho consists of about 65 flats, where approximately 200 women work as prostitutes. There is a lot of money making involved and everyone wants to have a slice of the cake. The landlords are letting the flats through leaseholders to the “madams”. A “madam” is a woman who is in charge or the running of the brothel. She hires the prostitute, who will pay approximately £300 a day for the use of the flat, and the “maid” who is in charge of looking after the young women who are working there.

80% of the women who work in Soho now are from foreign countries. The majority come from Albania; some are from Russia or other Eastern Block countries and some have recently arrived from Thailand. The women from Albania tend to come to England with their partners, whereas others come via crime organizations operating within their country. Most Albanian women work for their partners, who usually take most of their money. Those coming in through the crime organizations had to pay a very high fee for their entry into the UK which must be paid off before they can start making money for themselves.

Prayer Points

• Pray for a revelation of Jesus to the women and for the yoke of the enemy to be broken.
• Pray for the organizations who traffic these women to be exposed and brought to justice.
• Pray for a change in the Law concerning landlords. That landlords can be held responsible and charged for living off immoral earnings if they rent out their properties for prostitution.
• Pray for Westminster Council who is planning to close down a big section of the red-light district within the next two years.
